Messick recognized with release of All-Conference softball team

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Huntingdon senior Katy Messick was recognized by the USA South Athletic Conference on Wednesday with the release of the All-Conference softball teams.

Messick was an honorable mention selection at pitcher.

Messick is 11-6 this season with a 2.68 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 104 1/3 innings. The Andalusia native ranks fourth in the conference in wins, fifth in strikeouts and sixth in ERA this season.

She is tied for third in the conference with 13 complete games this season, including complete-game shutouts against Covenant and Methodist. She has allowed one earned run or less in seven games this season and recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts against Meredith.

In its second season as a member of the USA South, Huntingdon finished the regular season with an 18-15 record. The Lady Hawks are the fifth seed entering this weekend's conference tournament in Rocky Mount, N.C.

Huntingdon opens the conference tournament on Friday against LaGrange at 8 a.m. Central.

Senior Gabby Alcantar was named to the USA South All-Sportsmanship team.

Averett's Taylor Dix and Mary Beth Smith were named Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year. Piedmont's Jessica Bagwell was named Rookie of the Year and Ferrum's Courtney Rudd was named Rookie Pitcher of the Year.
