Lady Hawks advance to Day 2 of USA South Tournament

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Huntingdon softball team lost its first game of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday but avoided elimination with a win in its second game.

Huntingdon fell to LaGrange 7-1 to open the day and eliminated North Carolina Wesleyan 3-1 to advance to Day 2 of the conference tournament. The fifth-seeded Lady Hawks (19-16) will play second-seeded William Peace (19-14-1) at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Facing elimination on Friday, the Lady Hawks responded against North Carolina Wesleyan (17-17). Jamie Langford doubled to score Gabby Alcantar and Daisha Henderson in the fifth inning and a single by Ashley Johnson scored Lindsey Selph in the sixth inning.

The Battling Bishops scored one run in the top of the sixth and had the bases loaded, but Huntingdon was able to get out of the inning without allowing a second run. In the seventh inning, Selph forced a pop out and a ground out before striking out the final batter to end the game.

Selph (5-5) pitched a complete game for the win and carried a one-hitter into the sixth inning. For the game, the freshman allowed three hits, struck out three and walked three.

Selph, Henderson and Johnson each finished with two hits.

In Game 1, LaGrange (21-13) scored six runs in the first three innings to take control. Henderson had Huntingdon's only hit and stole home in the sixth inning to score the Lady Hawks' lone run.

Henderson finished with three stolen bases in the game. Senior Katy Messick (11-7) took the loss.
