Softball splits on opening day

ATLANTA – The Huntingdon softball team split with Agnes Scott and 18th-ranked Emory University on Saturday in the 3n2 Elite Event.

The Lady Hawks (1-1) opened the season with a 9-3 win over Agnes Scott before falling to Emory 7-0.

Huntingdon took control quickly against Agnes Scott, scoring four runs in the first inning and two runs in the fourth. The Lady Hawks added three runs in the sixth inning.

Junior Daisha Henderson was 3-for-4 with two runs and was one of four Huntingdon players with multiple hits. Senior Jessica Swindle was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run, junior Jesse Dunn was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run and freshman Katrina Harden was 2-for-3 with a RBI.

Sophomore Lindsey Selph drove in two runs, senior Chelsea Messer and junior Kala Rooney each scored two runs and junior Brandi Blair had a RBI and a run.

Blair drove in the first run of the game with a RBI single to score Henderson. Blair and Messer both scored on an error before Dunn singled to score Rooney and make it 4-0 in the first inning.

Leading 4-2 in the fourth inning, Messer and Henderson scored on a two-run single by Swindle. With a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, Selph singled to drive in Swindle and Rooney before Harden closed the scoring with a RBI single that scored Dunn.

Selph (1-0) pitched a complete game to pick up the win. She finished with four strikeouts, four walks and allowed two earned runs on eight hits.

In Game 2, Emory pitcher Brittany File threw a no-hitter and struck out 14.

Raina Lanier (0-1) took the loss for Huntingdon.

Huntingdon returns to action in the 3n2 Elite Event on Sunday. The Lady Hawks will play Emory at 9 a.m. and Agnes Scott at 11 a.m.
