Softball splits with Millsaps and Dallas

JACKSON, Miss. – The Huntingdon softball team dropped its first game but came from behind to win its second game on Saturday at Millsaps College.

The Lady Hawks lost to Millsaps 7-1 before getting by the University of Dallas 11-10.

Huntingdon (2-4) rallied from a seven-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the seventh to edge Dallas (1-3).

Trailing 10-9 in the seventh inning, Kerri Reed singled and Daisha Henderson drew a walk to put runners on base for the Lady Hawks. With one out, Blake Rowland put the ball in play and reached on an error, allowing Reed to score the tying run and Henderson to score the winning run.

The game got off to a rough start for the Lady Hawks as Dallas sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored eight runs. Huntingdon scored two runs in the third when Jesse Dunn drew a bases-loaded walk and Henderson scored on an error.

Trailing 9-2 in the sixth inning, Huntingdon used five hits and two errors to get back in the game. An RBI single by Henderson helped start the rally. Rowland drove in two runs to make it 9-5 before Jessica Swindle's two-run single made it a two-run game. Kala Rooney and Jamie Langford each added RBI singles to tie the game.

Dallas scored one run in the top of the seventh to briefly retake the lead before Huntingdon completed the rally in the bottom of the seventh.

Reed finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs, Henderson was 2-for-4 with three runs and a RBI and Langford was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Rowland and Swindle each had two RBIs and a run, Dunn and Rooney each had one RBI and Blair, Chelsea Messer each scored one run.

Reed (1-1) picked up the win in six innings of relief. Reed struck out five, walked five, scattered five hits and allowed one earned run.

Raina Lanier (0-3) took the loss against Millsaps. Henderson and Brandi Blair accounted for Huntingdon's two hits. Henderson scored Huntingdon's run on a passed ball in the sixth inning.

The Lady Hawks return to action on Sunday at Millsaps. Huntingdon will play Millsaps at noon and Dallas at 2 p.m.
