Huntingdon sweeps softball doubleheader

MACON, Ga. – The Huntingdon softball team swept Wesleyan College in a doubleheader on Thursday.

The Lady Hawks took the first game 10-0 and completed the sweep with a 7-1 win in Game 2.

Blake Rowland drove in five runs, scored two runs and had three hits for the Lady Hawks (4-6) in the doubleheader. Chelsea Messer scored four runs and had an RBI, three hits and four stolen bases in the two games.

In Game 1, Huntingdon scored three runs in the third inning and three runs in the fourth inning before closing the game with four runs in the seventh inning. In Game 2, the Lady Hawks trailed 1-0 before answering with four runs in the third inning, two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.

An RBI single by Messer and a Wesleyan error put Huntingdon in front 3-0 in the third inning of Game 1. In the fourth inning, Jesse Dunn scored on a wild pitch and Rowland doubled in two runs to make it 6-0.

The Lady Hawks made it 7-0 on a Wesleyan error in the seventh inning before Rowland stole home. Brandi Blair and Lindsey Selph scored Huntingdon's final two runs on an error.

Rowland was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a run and two stolen bases and was one of five Huntingdon players with two hits in the game. Messer was 2-for-3 with three runs, an RBI and two stolen bases and Daisha Henderson was 2-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases.

Blair was 2-for-4 with a run and Felicia Peoples was 2-for-2. Selph had an RBI and a run and Dunn and Katrina Harden each scored one run.

Raina Lanier (1-4) picked up the win, striking out five, walking six and allowing six hits in seven scoreless innings.

In Game 2, an RBI single by Lanier, a two-run single by Rowland and a Wesleyan error helped Huntingdon take a 4-1 lead in the third inning. A pair of RBI singles by Selph and Lanier made it 6-1 in the sixth inning before an RBI single by Blair ended the scoring in the seventh.

Lanier and Selph each had two hits in the second game. Lanier finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run and Selph was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

Rowland had two RBIs and a run and Blair had one RBI. Henderson, Messer, Dunn and Jessica Swindle each scored one run. Messer also had two stolen bases.

Lindsey Selph (2-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Kerri Reed. Reed pitched three innings, walking one and allowing one run on three hits. Selph pitched the final four innings, walking two and allowing three hits.

Huntingdon will play its first home games of the season with a doubleheader against Agnes Scott on Sunday. Game 1 is set for noon.
