LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Huntingdon softball team opened conference play with a pair of wins at LaGrange College on Wednesday.
The Lady Hawks knocked off the Panthers 3-1 in the first game and rallied to win the second game 5-3. With the two wins, Huntingdon (8-6, 2-0 USA South) extended its winning streak to six games.
Senior Blake Rowland and freshman Katrina Harden combined for four of Huntingdon's seven RBIs in the two games and Harden and junior Brandi Blair combined to score four runs on the day. Blair, Rowland and junior Daisha Henderson each had three hits in the doubleheader.
Harden and Blair also had the first home runs of the season for Huntingdon. Harden had a solo home run in Game 1 and Blair had a solo home run in Game 2.
In Game 1, the Lady Hawks took a 2-0 lead on a single by Rowland in the third inning. Leading 2-1 in the top of the seventh, Harden gave Huntingdon a two-run lead with her first collegiate home run.
Rowland was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and was the only Lady Hawk with multiple hits in the first game. Harden scored twice and had an RBI and Chelsea Messer scored once.
Raina Lanier (3-4) pitched a complete game for the win. Lanier struck out eight, walked two, gave up seven hits and allowed one run.
In Game 2, Huntingdon fell behind 3-2 in the fourth inning but rallied with two runs in the sixth inning and one run in the seventh. An RBI single by Jessica Swindle scored Lindsey Selph to tie the game in the sixth and a sacrifice fly by Harden scored Felicia Peoples to give Huntingdon the lead.
Rowland scored the final run of the game on a wild pitch in the seventh inning. Blair scored Huntingdon's first two runs of the game, hitting a solo home run in the second inning and scoring on a Jamie Langford single in the fourth inning.
Blair, Henderson and Selph each had two hits in Game 2.
Selph (3-0) earned the win in relief of starter Kerri Reed and Lanier earned her first save of the season.
Huntingdon returns to action at home on March 12 with a doubleheader against Maryville. Game 1 is set for noon.
