Huntingdon sweeps William Peace in softball doubleheader

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team won a pair of one-run games in a conference doubleheader on Sunday.

The Lady Hawks won 6-5 in the first game and 4-3 in Game 2.

In Game 1, Daisha Henderson singled in Kala Rooney for the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh inning, with the bases loaded and one out, shortstop Blake Rowland, catcher Jamie Langford and third baseman Katrina Harden turned a double play to end the game.

In Game 2, Henderson scored on a sacrifice fly by Rowland in the bottom of the seventh to end the game and complete the sweep.

Huntingdon's two wins, combined with Piedmont's sweep of Averett University on Sunday helped the Lady Hawks climb to second in the USA South Athletic Conference standings.

Piedmont (17-8, 7-1 USA South) leads the conference and Huntingdon (12-10, 6-2 USA South) and Averett (14-11, 6-2 USA South) are tied for second. Peace (18-8, 7-3 USA South) is fourth.

Henderson finished the day with three hits, three runs and two RBIs. Jessica Swindle was 4-for-6 with two RBIs, three runs and three doubles in the two games. Kala Rooney was 3-for-4 and Brand Blair drove in four runs.

In Game 1, Henderson, Chelsea Messer and Rooney each had two hits. Henderson, Swindle and Blair combined to drive in all six of Huntingdon's runs.

Blair drove in Swindle and Messer with a double in the first inning. In the second inning, Henderson singled to score Lindsey Selph and Swindle doubled to score Messer and Henderson and give the Lady Hawks a 5-0 lead.

Peace tied the game with five runs in the fifth inning before Henderson's RBI single put Huntingdon ahead in the bottom of the sixth.

Raina Lanier (6-5) picked up the win in her seventh complete game of the season. Lanier struck out five, walked four, hit two batters, gave up eight hits and allowed one earned run and four unearned runs.

Swindle (1-0) earned the win in three innings of relief in Game 2. Swindle was also 3-for-4 with two runs in the game. Rowland and Blair each had two RBIs and Henderson scored twice.

An RBI single by Rowland in the first inning and a two-run triple by Blair in the third inning gave Huntingdon a 3-1 lead. Peace answered with a run in the fourth inning and a run in the sixth inning to tie the game and set up Rowland's game-ending sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Huntingdon plays at Berry College in a doubleheader on Tuesday. Game 1 is set for 1 p.m. Central.
