Huntingdon comes up short in softball doubleheader

DANVILLE, Va. – The Huntingdon softball team lost a pair of 4-1 games in a conference doubleheader at Averett University on Friday.

The Lady Hawks (12-14, 6-4 USA South) gave up four runs in the first three innings to fall behind in Game 1. In Game 2, Huntingdon carried a 1-1 tie into the bottom of the seventh before Averett (16-11, 8-2 USA South) ended the game with a three-run home run.

With the win, Averett remains second in the conference standings. Huntingdon drops from tied for second to tied for fifth.

In Game 1, catcher Jesse Dunn was the only Lady Hawk with multiple hits. Dunn was 2-for-3 and scored Huntingdon's run on a sacrifice fly by Chelsea Messer in the seventh inning.

Raina Lanier (6-7) took the loss in Game 1 and Kerri Reed (2-5) took the loss in Game 2.

Jamie Langford had two of Huntingdon's three hits in the second game. Langford was 2-for-2 and drove in Blake Rowland to give the Lady Hawks a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Averett tied the game in the fifth inning before ending the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Huntingdon plays at Greensboro in a conference doubleheader on Saturday. Game 1 is set for noon.
