Lady Hawks fall in pair of one-run battles

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Huntingdon softball team lost both games of a doubleheader at Greensboro on Saturday.

The Lady Hawks fell 1-0 in Game 1 and 4-3 in Game 2.

In the first game, Huntingdon (12-16, 6-6 USA South) battled Greensboro (17-11, 6-6 USA South) to a 0-0 tie into the bottom of the seventh inning before the Pride drove in the winning run with a two-out double.

In the second game, Huntingdon fell behind 4-0 in the first three innings before answering with a run in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth. But the Lady Hawks could not overtake Greensboro in the final two innings.

Freshman Katrina Harden led Huntingdon with four hits and a run in the doubleheader and Brandi Blair and Jessica Swindle each had three hits in the two games. In the second game, Harden was 3-for-4 with a run, Blair was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run and Swindle was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Raina Lanier (6-8) took the loss in Game 1, striking out five, walking two, scattering four hits and allowing one run. Kerri Reed (2-6) took the loss in Game 2.

In Game 2, trailing 4-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Blair scored on an RBI single by Swindle. In the fifth inning, a two-run single by Blair scored Harden and Chelsea Messer.

Huntingdon returns to action at home with a doubleheader on Thursday against NAIA power LSU-Alexandria. Game 1 is set for 1 p.m.

The seventh-ranked Generals have been ranked in the top-10 of the NAIA Softball Coaches Poll for 21 straight polls dating to 2014.
