Huntingdon splits with Covenant in softball doubleheader

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Huntingdon softball team split with Covenant in a conference doubleheader on Saturday.

Huntingdon won the first game 6-3 before falling 9-5 in the second game.

Huntingdon (16-18, 10-8 USA South) rallied from an early deficit, scoring six runs in three innings, to win Game 1. In Game 2, the Lady Hawks rallied from a seven-run deficit and made it a two-run game in the sixth inning. But Covenant (17-18-1, 7-13 USA South) answered with two runs and closed out the game.

Daisha Henderson, Jesse Dunn and Katrina Harden combined for 10 of the Lady Hawks' 21 hits in the doubleheader. Henderson was 4-for-6 with an RBI, two runs and two stolen bases in the two games. Dunn was 3-for-6 with two RBIs and Harden was 3-for-7 with three RBIs.

Raina Lanier (8-8) earned the win in Game 1, striking out 11, walking four, hitting three batters, scattering five hits and allowing three runs in a complete game.

Henderson, Jessica Swindle, Lindsey Selph and Dunn each had two hits in the game. Swindle had a solo home run, her first of the season, in the fifth inning. Dunn had two RBIs and Selph scored twice in the game.

Brandi Blair scored Huntingdon's first run on a Kala Rooney ground out in the fourth inning. A two-run single by Dunn scored Selph and Blake Rowland to give Huntingdon a 3-1 lead.

Leading 4-1 in the sixth inning, Selph scored on an RBI single by Henderson and Harden drew a bases-loaded walk to score Rooney and make it 6-1.

In Game 2, Henderson and Harden each had two hits. Henderson scored twice and Harden drove in two runs. Rowland also scored two runs.

Trailing 7-0 in the third inning, Huntingdon scored three runs. Rowland scored on an error, Henderson scored when Rooney drew a bases-loaded walk and Chelsea Messer scored on a passed ball.

The Lady Hawks cut Covenant's lead to three runs in the fourth inning when Harden singled to score Rowland. Harden drove in another run in the sixth inning with a single that scored Henderson to make it a 7-5 game.

Swindle (1-1) took the loss in Game 2.

Huntingdon returns to action at Piedmont on Sunday. Game 1 of the doubleheader is set for 11 a.m. Central.
