Lady Hawks fall twice on Day 1 of USA South Tournament

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Huntingdon softball team fell to Maryville and Greensboro on Friday on the opening day of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Lady Hawks lost to Maryville 5-4 before losing to Greensboro 5-3.

Against Maryville (25-15), the Lady Hawks (17-21) scored two runs in the first inning, fell behind 5-2 and pulled within a run in the seventh inning.

Jessica Swindle was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run and was one of four Lady Hawks with multiple hits. Chelsea Messer was 2-for-3 with two runs, Blake Rowland was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run and Kala Rooney was 2-for-3. Kerri Reed had one RBI.

Raina Lanier (9-9) took the loss in Game 1 and Lindsey Selph (4-4) took the loss in Game 2.

Against Greensboro (25-15), Huntingdon trailed 2-1 before Greensboro scored three runs in the sixth inning. The Lady Hawks scored two runs in the seventh but could not complete the comeback.

Katrina Harden was the only Huntingdon player with multiple hits and finished the game 2-for-3. Messer finished with an RBI and a run, Rooney and Reed each had an RBI and Felicia Peoples and Brandi Blair each scored one run.
