MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team split a doubleheader with Martin Methodist on Wednesday.
The Redhawks, the 14th-ranked team in the NAIA preseason poll, won 7-5 in Game 1 before Huntingdon won 2-0 in Game 2. The win in the second game was the fourth victory for Huntingdon (4-12) in the past six games.
Freshman Madison Hunt (1-0) earned the win in Game 2 with a three-hit shutout. Backed up by a defense that recorded 11 flyouts and seven ground outs, Hunt carried a one-hitter into the seventh inning and finished with three strikeouts.
After allowing one Redhawk to reach base in the first inning on a single, Huntingdon did not allow another Martin Methodist baserunner until the seventh inning.
Tied 0-0 in the fourth inning, senior Jesse Dunn helped Huntingdon find a spark with a two-out single. It was the first of three straight two-out singles for the Lady Hawks. Freshman Samara Miller followed Dunn with a single and freshman Maggie Porter singled to drive in Dunn for Huntingdon's first run.
The Lady Hawks added their final run in the sixth inning when junior Raina Lanier singled and later scored on an error.
Porter and junior Lindsey Selph each had two hits in the game. Selph was 4-for-6 in the doubleheader with three RBIs and a run, including a three-run home run in the seventh inning of Game 1. Porter had four hits, an RBI and two runs during the two games.
In Game 1, Martin Methodist (8-9) scored two runs on an error in the first inning, added two runs in the third inning and three runs in the seventh inning. Five of the seven runs were unearned.
Huntingdon had a season-high 12 hits in the first game as Porter, Selph, Miller, senior Brandi Blair and junior Amber Wade each had two hits. Porter and Miller each scored two runs.
Lanier (2-6) took the loss, striking out eight, scattering 10 hits and allowing two earned runs in seven innings.
Huntingdon travels to Covenant for a conference doubleheader on Saturday. Game 1 is set for noon (Central).
