Huntingdon sweeps USA South East Division leader Averett

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Raina Lanier drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to cap Huntingdon's sweep of Averett University on Saturday.

The Lady Hawks rallied to beat the Cougars 12-10 in Game 1 before winning 7-6 in Game 2 of the USA South Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Averett (13-13, 5-3 USA South) entered Saturday leading the USA South East Division.

Trailing 10-4 in Game 1, Huntingdon (8-16, 6-3 USA South) scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and five runs in the sixth to complete the comeback and take the win.

Tied 3-3 after seven innings in Game 2, the Lady Hawks scored four runs in the eighth to take the win.

Lindsey Selph went 5-for-8 with four RBIs in the doubleheader. MacKenzie Smelley hit a two-run home run in Game 2 and finished the day with three runs, four RBIs and three hits. Kelsie Dardon and Brandi Blair each finished with four runs, three hits and two RBIs.

In Game 2, Blair scored Huntingdon's first run in extra innings on a passed ball before Selph doubled to left field, scoring Dardon and Smelley to tie the game 6-6. Selph later advanced to third on an Amber Wade ground out and scored the winning run on Lanier's single to left field.

Madison Hunt (4-1) picked up the win in Game 2 in relief of Selph. Hunt entered the game with one out in the eighth inning. Selph pitched the first 7 1/3 innings. The junior allowed just three hits in the first six innings and finished with seven strikeouts and allowed eight hits and two earned runs.

Smelley went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Dardon scored two runs and had two hits. Selph finished Game 2 with three hits, a run and one RBI.

In Game 1, Huntingdon jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Averett answered with three runs in the fourth and seven runs in the fifth. The Lady Hawks pulled within three runs after scoring three in the fifth. After holding the Cougars scoreless in the top of the sixth, Huntingdon scored three runs to tie the game 10-10 before Selph drove in two runs to put the Lady Hawks in front 12-10.

Blair went 2-for-4 with three runs and one RBI. Dardon scored two runs and had two RBIs while Smelley had two RBIs. Selph finished Game 1 with three RBIs.

Haley Riddle (1-1) earned the win for Huntingdon in Game 1 after pitching the final 2 2/3 innings. She allowed two runs off five hits.

Huntingdon hosts USA South opponent Greensboro on Sunday for Senior Day. First pitch is set for noon.
