Huntingdon wins Game 1 of doubleheader at Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Huntingdon softball team split a conference doubleheader at Methodist University on Sunday.

The Lady Hawks won 9-0 in five innings to open the doubleheader and fell 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning in Game 2.

In Game 1, Huntingdon (10-22, 9-7 USA South) scored all nine runs in the first inning. The Lady Hawks sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning and took advantage of eight hits and two Methodist errors.

MacKenzie Smelley's two-run double and Lindsey Selph's RBI single brought in the first three runs before an RBI single by Jesse Dunn made it 4-0. Raina Lanier brought in one run with a ground out and Dunn scored on an error to make it a six-run game.

Following a run by Alex Teague, an RBI double by Samara Miller and an RBI single by Brandi Blair put Huntingdon ahead 9-0.

Porter was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs in Game 1 and Miller was 2-for-2 with two runs. Smelley had two RBIs and a run and Blair, Selph and Dunn each had an RBI and a run. Lanier and Amber Wade each had one RBI and Teague scored once.

Lanier (3-11) earned the win with her second shutout of the season, striking out six, walking one and allowing three hits. In Game 2, Selph (1-5) took the loss in six innings, striking out eight, walking seven, allowing six hits and three earned runs.

In the second game, Huntingdon scored two runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning to build a 4-3 lead. But the Monarchs (8-24, 4-10 USA South) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.

Selph had two hits, an RBI and a run in Game 2, Miller had two hits and an RBI and Smelley had two hits and a run. Dunn had one RBI and Teague and Lanier each scored one run.

Huntingdon hosts LaGrange in a conference doubleheader on Wednesday. Game 1 is set for 1 p.m.
