Huntingdon splits with Belhaven in debut of new softball field

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The long wait is over for the Huntingdon softball team.

After months of anticipation, the Lady Hawks took the field for the first games in their new facility on Thursday. Huntingdon split with Belhaven in the field's debut, losing 7-5 in Game 1 and winning 4-3 in Game 2. 

On a day of firsts for the new facility, junior Rayne Ellis recorded Huntingdon's first hit on the new field with a triple in the third inning of Game 1, sophomore Maggie Porter drove in senior Amber Wade and Ellis for the Lady Hawks' first two runs in the sixth inning of Game 1 and freshman Katie Dewey belted the first home run with a two-run homer in the second inning of Game 2.

Senior pitcher Lindsey Selph (1-0) earned the first win with a complete-game effort in Game 2. Selph gave up five hits, three earned runs, struck out two and walked four in seven innings.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning of Game 2, Huntingdon answered in the bottom of the second inning. With Paige Taylor on base, Dewey tied the game with her two-run home run to right-center field. Wade drove in Amari Fleming with a double to give Huntingdon the lead. Huntingdon made it 4-2 in the fourth inning when Avery Harrison singled to drive in Alyssa Singleterry.

The score stood until the seventh when Belhaven loaded the bases with two outs. The Blazers scored one run before Huntingdon's McKenzie Ridgway made an out at third base to end the game.

Dewey had two of Huntingdon's four hits in the game and finished 2-for-3. She was 3-for-4 in the doubleheader.

In Game 1, Ellis and Porter accounted for five of Huntingdon's seven hits. Ellis was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Porter was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Ridgway and Samara Miller each had one RBI and Fleming scored once.

Madison Hunt (0-2) took the loss in Game 1.
