Huntingdon edges Dallas in 10 innings, falls to Mount St. Joseph

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team split on the first day of the Jimmy John's Classic on Saturday.

The Lady Hawks fell to Mount St. Joseph 3-1 in the first game of the day and beat the University of Dallas 5-4 in 10 innings in the final game of the day. Mount St. Joseph defeated Dallas 3-2 in the tournament's second game of the day.

Against Dallas, Huntingdon trailed 2-0 in the fifth inning when Alyssa Singleterry tied the game with a two-run inside-the-park home run. The tie stood at the end of seven innings.

Dallas scored a run in the top of the eighth and the top of the ninth innings, but Huntingdon answered each time. Singleterry scored on an RBI single by Katie Lee in the bottom of the eighth and Madison Perryman scored on a ground out by Paige Taylor in the bottom of the ninth.

The Lady Hawks used a pair of ground outs and a strikeout by Madison Hunt to get through the top of the 10th without giving up a run. In the bottom of the 10th, with the bases loaded, Maggie Porter was hit by a pitch to bring in Claire Tomberlin for the winning run. Tomberlin also scored earlier in the game on Singleterry's home run.

Hunt (3-2) pitched a complete game to get the win and finished with seven strikeouts, one walk, seven hits and one earned run allowed in 10 innings.

Singleterry was the only Lady Hawk with multiple hits and finished the game 2-for-4.  

Against Mount St. Joseph, Huntingdon carried a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning before the Lions scored three runs in the final two innings.

Lindsey Selph (2-3) took the loss in 6 1/3 innings. Selph carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and finished with eight strikeouts and six walks, gave up four hits and allowed two earned runs.

Singleterry scored Huntingdon's run on a sacrifice fly by Katie Dewey in the fourth inning. Singleterry also had a triple to account for one of Huntingdon's two hits in the game.
