Lady Hawks close conference play with sweep of Berea

BEREA, Ky. – The Huntingdon softball team swept Berea 10-0 and 16-2 on Saturday in the final USA South Athletic Conference doubleheader of the regular season.

Game 1 was shortened to six innings and Game 2 was shortened to five innings.

Huntingdon (18-18, 8-6 USA South) ends the regular season as the fifth-place team in the West Division of the USA South. The top six teams in the West Division and the top six teams in the East Division qualify for the conference tournament.

The top three seeds in each division will host the bottom three seeds in a best-of-three first round series. As the No. 5 seed, Huntingdon will travel to play No. 2 Piedmont in a doubleheader on April 7. Should a third game be needed, it will be played on April 8.

The six first-round winners will advance to the double elimination portion of the conference tournament in LaGrange, Ga., on April 13-15.

In Saturday's sweep, Huntingdon took control early in both games. The Lady Hawks scored six runs in the first three innings of Game 1 and scored nine runs in the first three innings of Game 2.

McKenzie Ridgway led Huntingdon in the doubleheader with six RBIs, three runs and three doubles on a 5-for-7 day. Rayne Ellis was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, three runs and four stolen bases and Alyssa Singleterry had three hits, four runs and two RBIs. 

In Game 1, Ridgway was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run and Kaci Cochran had two RBIs, a run and three stolen bases. Singleterry scored two runs and Caitlyn Caffee had two hits, a run and two stolen bases. Ellis had an RBI, a run and two stolen bases.

Katie Lee, Katie Dewey, Amber Wade and Samara Miller each had one RBI and Claire Tomberlin, Paige Taylor, Ashley Carroll and Amari Fleming each scored one run.

Madison Hunt (9-4) picked up the win, striking out seven and scattering three hits in six innings.

In Game 2, Ridgway was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs and Singleterry and Ellis were each 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Ellis also had two stolen bases. Taylor had two RBIs and two runs and Fleming had three runs and two RBIs.

Carly Cincotta had one RBI and one run and Caffee and Avery Harrison each had one RBI. Maggie Porter and Tomberlin each scored two runs.

Lindsey Selph (7-11) was the winning pitcher in Game 2 with seven strikeouts, three walks, three hits allowed and one earned run allowed in four innings.
