Lady Hawks split to open season

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Huntingdon softball team split with the University of Ozarks and Rhodes College to open the season on Saturday.                   

Huntingdon beat Ozarks 9-7 before falling to Rhodes 5-0.

Alyssa Singleterry, McKenzie Ridgway, Lydia Lewis and Annie Nolan combined for 15 hits, eight RBIs and four runs in the two games. Singleterry was 4-for-7 with two RBIs and a run, Ridgway was 4-for-7 with an RBI and two runs, Lewis was 4-for-7 with two RBIs, a run and two stolen bases and Nolan was 3-for-6 with three RBIs.

In the win over Ozarks, Huntingdon put together 17 hits, scored four runs in the second inning and took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tied 6-6 in the sixth, Huntingdon took the lead on an RBI single by Hannah Vines before a two-run double by Lewis made it a 9-6 game.

Singleterry was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run in the game, Ridgway was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs and Nolan was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Lewis finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run and Vines had two hits, an RBI and a run. Emily Nieuwstraten scored two runs and Rayne Ellis and Claire Tomberlin each scored one run.

Lauren Melton (1-0) pitched a complete game to earn the win.

Against Rhodes, Lewis had two hits to lead Huntingdon. Mallory McCarty (0-1) took the loss in five innings.
