Huntingdon sweeps Mississippi University for Women

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team won both games of a doubleheader with the Mississippi University for Women on Wednesday.

The Lady Hawks won the first game 4-1 and completed the sweep with a 1-0 win in Game 2. 

Pitching and defense led the Lady Hawks in both games. Pitchers Lauren Melton and Madison Hunt combined for eight strikeouts, one walk, one run and eight hits in the two games.

Melton (5-3) pitched all seven innings in Game 1 for her fourth complete game of the season. The sophomore struck out six, walked one, gave up four hits and allowed one run.

Hunt (8-2) pitched her eighth complete game and third complete-game shutout of the season. The junior struck out two and allowed four hits in seven innings. 

In Game 1, Huntingdon scored all four runs in the first inning. Alyssa Singleterry and McKenzie Ridgway scored on two separate errors before Caitlyn Caffee drove in Annie Nolan and Kaci Cochran with a two-run single.

Huntingdon was held to three hits in Game 2, but the Lady Hawks put two hits together in the fifth inning to score the only run of the game. Hannah Vines led off the bottom of the fifth with a single before Singleterry tripled to drive in Vines and give Huntingdon the lead.

Coming Up: Huntingdon will host Birmingham-Southern on Saturday. Game 1 of the doubleheader is set for noon.
