Huntingdon eliminates LaGrange in Rd. 1 of USA South Tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team kept its season going with a 6-3 win over LaGrange on Saturday in the first round of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament.

The win capped a best-of-three first-round series that began on Friday. Huntingdon won the first game 5-4 on Friday and LaGrange won the second game 5-3 to force Game 3.

Huntingdon advances to the double elimination portion of the tournament in LaGrange, Ga. The Lady Hawks will open the tournament against Averett on April 26 at 9 a.m. (Central).

With a 30-13 record, this is the first time Huntingdon has reached 30 wins in a season during the NCAA era.

In Saturday's game, Huntingdon had to rally late to earn the win. Trailing 3-0 in the fifth inning, Huntingdon tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, took the lead in the sixth inning and sealed the victory in the seventh inning.

Rayne Ellis and Alyssa Singleterry combined to drive in five of Huntingdon's six runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Ellis drove in Hannah Vines and Singleterry with a two-run single to make it a one-run game. Ellis later scored to tie the game when Kaci Cochran drew a bases-loaded walk.

Singleterry gave Huntingdon the lead in the sixth inning, driving in Madison Perryman and Vines with a two-run triple. Ellis singled to drive in Singleterry for the final run.

In the seventh inning, pitcher Madison Hunt forced two fly outs and gave up one single before ending the game with a strikeout. Hunt (18-4) earned the win in 4 2/3 innings of relief, striking out four, allowing five hits and giving up two unearned runs.

Singleterry finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs, a triple and a double. Singleterry, who entered the series tied for the Division III lead with eight triples, now has 10 triples this season.

Ellis finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run and Vines was 2-for-3 with two runs.
