Lady Hawks fall to Averett in 10 innings in USA South Tournament

LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Huntingdon softball team took Averett University to 10 innings on Friday but fell 6-4 in the USA South Conference Tournament.

The loss dropped Huntingdon into the elimination bracket. The Lady Hawks (30-14) will play Meredith (14-23) in an elimination game on Saturday at 9 a.m. (Central) at the Shuford Softball Complex.

Huntingdon scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings. Each team scored a run in the eighth inning and the two teams carried a 4-4 tie into the 10th inning.

Averett (27-14) took the lead for good with a two-run home run in the top of the 10th and the Lady Hawks were unable to answer in the bottom of the 10th.

In the seventh inning, Huntingdon overcame a three-run deficit to keep the game going. Kaci Cochran doubled to drive in Annie Nolan for the first run before Lydia Lewis drove in Cochran and Madison Perryman with a two-run single.

Huntingdon scored its final run in the eighth inning. Trailing 4-3, Caitlyn Caffee drove in McKenzie Ridgway with a single.

Nolan, Lewis and Perryman combined for eight of Huntingdon's 12 hits. Lewis was 3-for-4, Nolan was 3-for-6 and Perryman was 2-for-4.

Madison Hunt (18-5) took the loss in her 14th complete game of the season. Hunt struck out eight, did not issue a walk, gave up 13 hits and allowed six runs in 10 innings.
