Softball knocks off Meredith but ends season against Averett in USA South Tournament

LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Huntingdon softball team won its first elimination game on Saturday but lost to Averett in the bottom of the seventh inning to end its run in the USA South Tournament.

The Lady Hawks opened the day with a 9-1 win over Meredith in five innings before suffering a 3-2 loss to the Cougars.

In the loss to Averett, Huntingdon scored two runs in the sixth inning to tie the game. Rayne Ellis scored on a wild pitch and McKenzie Ridgway scored on a sacrifice fly by Kaci Cochran to make it 2-2.

Averett ended the game in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single.

Both of Huntingdon's losses in the conference tournament came against Averett. The Cougars won the opening round game 6-4 in 10 innings on Friday.

Madison Hunt (19-6) pitched a complete game in the loss. Hunt earned the win against Meredith in the first game of the day in three innings.

In the win over the Avenging Angels, Huntingdon took a 3-1 lead in the third inning and put the game away with six runs in the bottom of the fifth.

An RBI single by Caitlyn Caffee, a two-run single by Hannah Vines,  and an RBI single by Alyssa Singleterry made it a 7-1 game before a two-run single by Ridgway ended the game.

Ridgway was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run in the game and Annie Nolan was 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Vines had two hits, two RBIs and a run, Singleterry had two hits, an RBI and a run and Ellis had two hits and a run.

Caffee finished with two RBIs and a run, Cochran had an RBI and a run and Lydia Lewis scored one run.

Huntingdon ends the season with 31 wins, the most by the Lady Hawks during the NCAA era.
