Huntingdon opens season with split against Rhodes and Louisiana College

MONTGOMERY, Ala.  – The Huntingdon softball team opened the season with a split on Saturday.

The Hawks beat Rhodes College 5-1 before losing to Louisiana College 9-3.

Madison Hunt (1-0) earned the win against Rhodes. The senior did not give up a run or issue a walk, struck out six and scattered five hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Huntingdon took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Rhodes and added four runs in the third inning. Michaela Denney was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Lydia Lewis was 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run and two stolen bases. Mollie Singleterry had an RBI and a run, Emily Nieuwstraten had a double and an RBI and Madison Perryman scored one run.

Against Louisiana College, Huntingdon fell behind 2-0 but took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning. Louisiana College answered with three runs in the sixth inning and four runs in the seventh inning.

Nieuwstraten had two RBIs and a double and Hannah Sims was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Singleterry was 2-for-3 with a run and Perryman scored one run.

Holly Sharp (0-1) took the loss in three innings of relief.

Coming Up: Huntingdon hosts three games on Sunday, beginning at noon. Rhodes and Louisiana College will play in the first game, followed by Huntingdon and Louisiana College in the second game and Huntingdon and Rhodes in the final game.
