Lady Hawks clinch first regular-season GSAC title

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon women's basketball team wrapped up its conference schedule with a 90-52 win over Wesleyan College on Saturday.

At the completion of the game, head coach Buzz Phillips delivered some exciting news to the Lady Hawks. With Saturday's win and Agnes Scott's 65-40 loss to Salem, Huntingdon (15-9, 8-2 Great South Athletic Conference) earned its first regular-season GSAC title.

"This is a first for our program and it's something these girls have worked extremely hard to accomplish," Phillips said. "We got off to a rough start this season, but these girls have worked hard to become a better team. When we were 3-6 and getting off the bus after our trip to Kentucky, I could see a look in our girls' eyes.

"They wanted to turn things around. After that, we won a few games and started building confidence and our work ethic got better and better. Since then, our team has continued to improve and we've had different players step up every game. We've stumbled a couple of times, but this team keeps battling."

The win over Wesleyan gives the Lady Hawks a 10-0 record at home this season. Going back to the final game of last season, Huntingdon has an 11-game winning streak at Roland Arena. The Lady Hawks hope to push the streak to 13 in the GSAC tournament next weekend.

Huntingdon hosts the tournament on Feb. 22-24.

Against Wesleyan (1-18, 0-10 GSAC), Patricia Pickens and Chelsea Taylor each scored 16 points. Taylor was 10-for-11 from the free-throw line and Pickens had nine rebounds. Raven Prater added 10 points. Tanjanik Munford finished with eight rebounds and Morgan Crawford had five steals and five assists. Katie Martin also had five assists.
