Lady Hawks open 2014 with win over Wesleyan

MACON, Ga. – The Huntingdon women's basketball team dominated the boards and downed Wesleyan 65-49 on Thursday.

Huntingdon (5-1) pulled down 77 rebounds to Wesleyan's 40. The 77 rebounds are a NCAA-era record for the Lady Hawks. The previous record of 70 was set against Wesleyan in 2008.

Senior Jodie Thomas and junior Tan Munford combined for 33 rebounds on Thursday. Thomas recorded a career-high 17 rebounds and also scored nine points and had two blocks. Munford matched her career high with 16 rebounds and scored 11 points and blocked two shots.

Raven Prater led Huntingdon in scoring with 14 points and eight rebounds and Pat Pickens finished with 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Arbanee Dean added nine rebounds and two blocks.

Huntingdon built as much as a 12-point lead in the first half and led 27-19 at halftime. In the second half, the Lady Hawks built a 20-point lead in the first seven minutes and closed out the game.

Huntingdon opens USA South Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Greensboro. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
