Hawks’ Prater named USA South Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Senior Raven Prater played a key role in two conference wins last week for the Huntingdon women's basketball team. Prater shot 53.1 percent from the field, averaged 27.5 points, five 3-pointers and 4.5 rebounds in wins over LaGrange and Covenant.

Prater was recognized by the USA South Athletic Conference on Monday with the release of the conference Athletes of the Week.

Prater, who scored a career-high 30 points earlier this season, totaled 28 points and five rebounds in an 82-72 win over LaGrange. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for LaGrange. In a 76-63 win over Covenant, Prater finished with 27 points and four rebounds.

Huntingdon's NCAA-era career leader in made 3-pointers, Prater hit 10 3s in the two games to give her 137 3s for her collegiate career. She leads the USA South with 49 3-pointers this season.

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Raven Prater, Huntingdon - The senior guard from Piedmont, Alabama averaged 27.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.0 steals per contest in a 2-0 week versus Conference competition. In an 82-72 win over LaGrange, Prater totaled 28 points, five rebounds, three assists and one steal. In a 76-63 win over Covenant, Prater scored 27 points, grabbed four rebounds, dished out two assists, collected one steal and blocked one shot. Also Nominated: Chevena Pickard, Greensboro; Jackie Lyles, Methodist; Lauren Burnett, Maryville; Shea Smith, Ferrum; Jessica Myers, Averett.

 

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Jamal Pullen, Ferrum - The junior forward from Alexandria, Virginia averaged a double-double of 28.5 points and 11.0 rebounds, to go along with 2.5 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.0 steals per contest, as the Panthers compiled a 1-1 record last week versus Conference competition. In an 88-84 win over Greensboro, Pullen notched a double-double of 30 points and 11 rebounds with two assists and one block. In a 72-70 loss at William Peace, Pullen again tallied a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three assists, two steals and two blocks. Rookies of the Week

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Devan Gregory, Greensboro - The Greensboro, North Carolina freshman guard averaged 18.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals per contest in a 1-1 week for The Pride versus Conference competition. In an 88-84 loss at Ferrum, Gregory totaled 20 points and six rebounds. In a 71-61 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Gregory scored 16 points, grabbed six rebounds and collected two steals. Also Nominated: Charles Bryant, Averett; Jalen Vince, William Peace.

 

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Brianna Taylor, Averett - The Rocky Mount, Virginia freshman forward averaged 17.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals per contest as the Cougars posted a 2-1 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 75-72 loss at Greensboro, Taylor tallied 12 points, four rebounds and three steals. In a 76-64 win over Methodist, Taylor totaled 18 points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal. Finally, in an 86-78 victory over N.C. Wesleyan, Taylor scored a career-high 21 points to go along with eight rebounds and two assists.
