Pickens recognized as USA South Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Junior Pat Pickens set a new Huntingdon single-game scoring record in the women's basketball team's 84-75 win over Piedmont on Saturday. The win helped the Lady Hawks move into a tie for second place in the South Division of the USA South Athletic Conference.

For her performance, Pickens was recognized on Monday by the USA South as the conference's Women's Basketball Player of the Week.

Pickens, a forward from Anniston, Ala., scored 35 points to break the Lady Hawks' NCAA-era single-game record of 33 points she set earlier this season. She also had 12 rebounds, four steals and was 13-of-20 from the field. The 13 made field goals ties the Huntingdon record Pickens set earlier this season.

For the season, Pickens leads Huntingdon with 335 points (16.8 per game), 42 assists and 45 steals and is second on the team with 178 rebounds (8.9 per game). She ranks second in the USA South in points scored, third in rebounds and fifth in steals.

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Bradley Robinson, Averett - The sophomore forward from Baltimore, Maryland averaged 20.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per contest as the Cougars compiled a 1-1 record last week versus Conference competition. In an 85-77 win over Ferrum, Robinson notched a double-double of 25 points and 14 rebounds with one assist and one block. In a 69-68 loss to William Peace, Robinson totaled 16 points, four rebounds and one block. Also Nominated: Spencer Shoffner, Maryville; Jamal Pullen, Ferrum; Josh Morrison, N.C. Wesleyan; Mark Wagner, LaGrange; Devan Gregory, Greensboro; Jerome Davis, Huntingdon.

 

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Pat Pickens, Huntingdon - The junior forward from Anniston, Alabama notched a double-double in the only contest of a week for the Hawks, an 84-75 win over USA South rival Piedmont. Pickens tallied a double-double of a school record 35 points to go along with 12 rebounds. She also added four steals and one assist in the victory. Baseball Player of the Week
Evan Gresham, Piedmont - The sophomore outfielder from Fayetteville, Georgia went a combined 5-for-8 (.625) with three runs scored, two RBI, one double one home run and one stolen base last week as the Lions swept a doubleheader from Guilford to open the season. In a 4-2, game one win, Gresham was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one double. In a 10-7, game two win, Gresham was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, one home run and one stolen base. Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Jake Perkins, Ferrum - The Appomattox, Virginia sophomore tossed a seven-inning no-hitter in a 3-0 season opening win over Southern Virginia in his only action on the mound so far this season. Perkins went the distance and struck out 16 hitters en-route to the victory. Also Nominated: Cody Beaver, Averett; Will Beasley, N.C. Rookies of the Week

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Devan Gregory, Greensboro - The Greensboro, North Carolina freshman guard averaged 18.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals per contest in a 2-0 week for The Pride versus Conference competition. In an 69-66 win over Methodist, Gregory totaled 20 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. In a 72-62 win over William Peace, Gregory scored 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out two assists. Also Nominated: Charles Bryant, Averett; Antonio Jackson, Maryville; Keith Corbett, Methodist; D.J. Weaver, N.C. Wesleyan.

 

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Kenyata Harris, N.C. Wesleyan The Raleigh, North Carolina freshman guard averaged a double-double of 17.0 points and 14.0 rebounds to go along with 5.3 steals and 1.3 assists per contest as the Bishops posted a 2-1 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 79-53 win over William Peace, Harris notched a double-double of ten points and 21 rebounds to go along with three steals, one assist and one block. In an 82-59 victory over Mary Baldwin, Harris tallied a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds to go along with seven steals and one assist. Finally, in an 86-59 loss at nationally-ranked Ferrum, Harris totaled 25 points, seven rebounds, six steals and two assists. Baseball Rookie of the Week
Griffin Olson, Piedmont - The freshman infielder from Lula, Georgia went a combined 4-for-6 (.667) with three runs scored, three RBI and two walks last week as the Lions swept a doubleheader from Guilford to open the season. In a 4-2, game one win, Olson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, one run batted in and one walk. In a 10-7, game two win, Olson was 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run scored and one walk. Also Nominated: Drew Evans, Averett; Luis Palencia, N.C. Wesleyan; Andrew Toney, Greensboro.

 

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Preston Graham, Piedmont - The Gainesville, Georgia freshman earned the win in his first career start, a 10-7 victory over Guilford in his lone appearance of the season so far. Graham tossed the first 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts to collect the win. Also Nominated: Cody Johnson, Averett; Spencer Ramsey, N.C. Wesleyan.
