Women’s basketball stumbles against Oglethorpe

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon women's basketball team fell behind early in the second half and lost to Oglethorpe 86-77 on Sunday.

The Lady Hawks (2-3) led for almost the entire first half, but Oglethorpe (5-4) took the lead after halftime and controlled the tempo for the remainder of the game.

"I thought we gave a tremendous effort against a good team," Huntingdon head coach Buzz Phillips said. "But there were three main things that cost us today. The first was the way we came out to start the second half. Those first five minutes of the second half are important and we didn't come out with any energy. They took the lead and we had to play from behind the rest of the game.

"The second thing was free throws. We shot 37 free throws and we only made 23. We didn't do our job at the free-throw line and that's been a problem this season. We have to be more consistent. Lastly, we just missed too many wide-open shots. I'm proud of the effort we gave, but we have to keep working and get better."

The Lady Hawks led 36-34 at halftime before Oglethorpe took the lead for good less than two minutes into the second half. The Stormy Petrels used an 18-6 run to take a 10 point lead, 52-42, with 14:01 left in the game.

Huntingdon rallied to make it a three-point game midway through the second half. But that was as close as the Lady Hawks could get.

Pat Pickens and Tan Munford both recorded double-doubles for Huntingdon. Pickens finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds and Munford had 11 points and 14 rebounds. Mackenzie Garmany added 15 points and Tiara Howton pulled down nine rebounds.

Huntingdon returns to action at home on Dec. 16 against Birmingham-Southern.
