Lady Hawks survive struggle with Birmingham-Southern

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon women's basketball team didn't turn in its best performance Tuesday night, but the Lady Hawks found a way to knock off Birmingham-Southern 64-62.

In a game where a total of 59 fouls were called and 70 free throws were attempted by the two teams, Huntingdon (3-3) overcame foul trouble, 16 missed free throws and 29 turnovers to pick up its third win in four games.

The win evened the record with Birmingham-Southern (5-4) this season. The Panthers won the first game 71-60 in November.

"We fought through a lot of adversity tonight, but the girls found a way to get the win," Huntingdon head coach Buzz Phillips said. "We had several starters on the bench because they got in foul trouble early, but that may have done us some good. That made us rely on some different players tonight, who were able to play well and get some quality minutes. We have to build off of the positives as we move forward and get ready for conference play."

With senior and leading scorer Pat Pickens on the bench for much of the game, the Lady Hawks got a boost from junior transfer Tierra Henry. Henry recorded her first double-double with Huntingdon, scoring 13 points and pulling down a season-high 11 rebounds.

Sophomore Mackenzie Garmany added 13 points and five rebounds. Pickens, who entered the game ranked fourth in Division III in scoring average with 24.6 points per game, finished with 12 points and five rebounds in 17 minutes. Tan Munford had 12 rebounds.

As a team, Huntingdon finished with 58 rebounds to Birmingham-Southern's 30. The Lady Hawks, who made 18-of-34 free throws for the game, hit 3-of-6 free throws in the final 20 seconds to hold off the Panthers. In the final 20 seconds, Garmany was 2-for-4 and Jello Weatherspoon was 1-for-2.

The Lady Hawks open USA South Athletic Conference play on Jan. 3, hosting Greensboro at 4 p.m.
