MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon women's basketball team started slow on Wednesday but took control in the second half and knocked off Covenant 80-68.
The Lady Hawks (13-11, 7-8 USA South) trailed for most of the first half but opened the second half with a 7-0 run. A Savannah Ward 3-pointer, two minutes into the second half, put Huntingdon in front for good.
Huntingdon did not trail the remainder of the game, but the Lady Hawks could not put Covenant (3-21, 2-13 USA South) away until the final minutes. Leading 70-65 with 2:30 to play, Mackenzie Garmany hit two 3-pointers in a span of 31 seconds to put Huntingdon up by 11.
Senior Pat Pickens turned in her 11th double-double of the season, finishing with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Pickens, who holds the Lady Hawks' records for points in a season and a career, pushed her season total to 483 and her career total to 1,459.
Garmany finished with 19 points, Jenna Dorman added nine points and Ward and Tan Munford each had eight points. Munford also had 12 rebounds, giving her 857 for her career. With one game remaining, Munford needs seven rebounds to break Huntingdon Hall of Famer Tiffany Jordan's career record of 863.
Huntingdon closes out the season with Senior Day on Saturday. The Lady Hawks host 17th-ranked Maryville at 4 p.m.
