Women’s basketball loses to Covenant in final minute

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon women's basketball team lost to Covenant College 68-64 on Saturday.

A Mackenzie Garmany 3-pointer put Huntingdon (9-11, 4-9 USA South) ahead 64-59 with 2:01 to play. But Covenant (8-14, 5-9 USA South) closed the game with a 9-0 run. The Scots took the lead for good with 41 seconds remaining.

The Lady Hawks started the game off slowly, but led 17-16 after the first quarter. Huntingdon clamped down on defense in the second quarter, holding the Scots (8-14, 5-9 USA South) to three points. Huntingdon led 29-19 going into halftime.

Sophomore Juliette Harp led Huntingdon with 13 points and eight rebounds. While Harp just missed out on a double-double, she is averaging 14.8 points per game, fourth in the USA South Athletic Conference. She leads the conference with 12 rebounds per game.

Coming out of halftime, the Scots outscored Huntingdon 23-20 and trailed by seven going into the fourth. The Lady Hawks built an 11 point lead, 58-47, with six minutes left, but the Scots outscored Huntingdon 21-6 to end the game.

Senior Savannah Ward finished with nine points, six assists and four rebounds. Ward and senior Brianna Glenn were each recognized before the game as part of Senior Day.

Garmany finished with nine points and three assists and Tiarrial Duncan had five points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.

The Lay Hawks return to Roland Arena on Wednesday as they host LaGrange College at 5:30 p.m.
