Huntingdon rallies late but falls at West Division leader Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Huntingdon women's basketball team battled back from a second-half deficit but lost to Maryville College 70-58 on Saturday.

Maryville (17-3, 9-0 USA South) leads the conference's West Division and owns the best record in the conference. Huntingdon (14-5, 6-3 USA South) is third in the West Division.

Trailing by 23 points, 53-30, with 4:10 left in the third quarter, the Lady Hawks outscored Maryville 28-14 to fight back into the game.

Sophomore Hannah Parks sank a 3-pointer with 49 seconds left in the game to help Huntingdon pull within nine points, 67-58. But that was as close as the Lady Hawks would get. Maryville sank 3-of-4 free throws in the final 47 seconds to take a 12-point lead.

Huntingdon never led in the game, but the Lady Hawks did not trail by more than eight points until the final two minutes of the first half.

Huntingdon trailed by four points, 26-22, with 3:48 left in the first half. Maryville used a 12-0 run to take a 16-point lead just before halftime and extended the lead to 23 points in the third quarter.

Juliette Harp led Huntingdon with 22 points and eight rebounds and Jello Weatherspoon added 18 points and four assists. T.I. Duncan had a team-high nine rebounds and two blocked shots.

Huntingdon returns to action at home on Tuesday against Judson. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
