Huntingdon women bounce back with win over Sewanee

LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Huntingdon women's basketball team used a 24-point third quarter to rally past Sewanee for a 60-59 win on Friday in the LaGrange College Classic.

T.I. Duncan, Shaonica Thomas and Alex Lowery combined for 50 of Huntingdon's 60 points. Duncan led all scorers with a career-high 21 points. Thomas, in her fourth game as a Lady Hawk, followed with 18 points and Lowery added 11 points.

Duncan and Thomas each had five rebounds and Hannah Parks had a team-high six rebounds. Indya Lawrence had a team-high six assists.

Huntingdon (3-1) played from behind for much of the first half. The Lady Hawks trailed 19-10 at the end of the first quarter and 31-18 with 1:54 left in the second quarter.

That's when Huntingdon began to rally. The Lady Hawks closed the second quarter and opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run to pull within three points, 31-28.

A basket by Lowery with 2:51 left in the third quarter capped a 20-6 run for Huntingdon and gave the Lady Hawks a 38-37 lead. Huntingdon outscored Sewanee 24-12 in the third quarter and carried a 46-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

The two teams battled evenly in the final quarter, with Sewanee (3-2) briefly retaking the lead, 55-54, with 2:54 remaining. Back-to-back baskets by Duncan put Huntingdon in front 58-55 with a little more than two minutes to play.

A Sewanee free throw made it a 58-56 game in the final 30 seconds before Lowery hit two free throws in the final seconds to put Huntingdon up 60-56. The Tigers hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it a one-point game.

Records: Huntingdon (3-1); Sewanee (3-2)

Notable: This was the first meeting between Huntingdon and Sewanee since 2007 and the Lady Hawks' first win over the Tigers in program history. The two teams played five times between 2004-2007, with Sewanee winning all five games.
