Lady Hawks open season with loss to Birmingham-Southern

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon women's basketball team fell to Birmingham-Southern 56-49 on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams.

Huntingdon rallied from a nine-point deficit at halftime and built a 12-point lead in the second half. But the Panthers made a late push and controlled the final quarter.

Trailing 27-18 at halftime, Huntingdon outscored Birmingham-Southern 30-11 in the third quarter. Behind 10 third-quarter points from senior Shaonica Thomas, Huntingdon tied the game midway through the quarter before back-to-back 3-pointers by Wyatt Bak and Alexis Osteen put Huntingdon in front 47-35 with 46 seconds left in the quarter.

But from there, the momentum swung to the Panthers.

Thomas had a team-high 15 points to go with five rebounds and four steals. Alina Shoemake added eight points and five rebounds and Indya Lawrence had a team-high seven rebounds.
