Lady Hawks tied for 3rd, freshman Rice tied for 2nd at DePauw

CLAYTON, Ind. – The Huntingdon women's golf team is tied for third and freshman Hallie Rice is tied for second after the opening round of the DePauw Small College Classic on Saturday.

Rice shot a 5-over-par 76 in just her third round of collegiate golf. Entering Sunday's final round at Deer Creek Golf Club, Rice is tied for second and trails tournament leader Emily Javadi of Sewanee by three strokes. Javadi shot a 2-over 73.

"I am extremely happy with the way Hallie played today," Huntingdon assistant coach Ashley Aguilera said. "This is just her second collegiate tournament and she came out and led us today. The whole team is very proud of her."

Rice is one of two Hawks in the top five. Junior LeeAnn Cahoon shot a 6-over 77 in Round 1 and is tied for fifth.

As a team, Huntingdon shot 320 in the first round and is tied with Sewanee for third place. Wittenberg, the Division III national runner-up last season, leads the tournament at 310. DePauw, which finished eighth in the NCAA Tournament last season, is in second place and one stroke ahead of Huntingdon at 319.

"I am proud of the girls' effort today," Aguilera said. "It was windy and it rained most of the morning before our round. Despite the conditions, the girls remained steady and put together another round of 320. We want to break 320 on Sunday."

The Lady Hawks have shot 320 in each of their three rounds this fall.

Behind Rice and Cahoon, sophomore Kelsey Spivey is tied for 13th with an 80. Junior Savannah Humber shot 87 and freshman Katelyn Gilmore shot 93. Playing as an individual, sophomore Lindsey Huff shot 92.
