Women’s lacrosse earns first win of the season

ATLANTA – The Huntingdon women's lacrosse team won its first game of the season, defeating Oglethorpe 11-6 on Wednesday.

Senior Briana Gress scored the game's first goal 1:03 into the first half. Oglethorpe answered with two straight goals to take the lead before Huntingdon's (1-3) Lonnitria Keenan and Ariana Kelty each scored twice to take a 5-2 lead with 4:06 remaining in the half.

The Stormy Petrels (1-4) answered with a goal but Shannen O'Leary scored with an assist from Carolyn Smith with 1:27 remaining in the half to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.

Both teams were held scoreless for the first part of the second half until Keenan added her third goal of the game. O'Leary added her second goal of the night followed by a goal from Smith with 8:00 left in the game to take a 9-4 lead.

Kelty and Jen Price both scored late in the game to give the Lady Hawks the win.

"I think our girls executed the game plan well and that is what gave us the win tonight," head coach Julia Steier said.

Freshman goalie Katie Bianco recorded six saves and allowed six goals.

Price finished with one goal, eight ground balls, three draw controls and eight caused turnovers.

Keenan and Kelty each had three goals while Kelty added one assist. O'Leary scored twice while Gress scored once.

Smith finished with one goal and two assists. Candace Williams recorded five ground balls and had three draw controls.

The Lady Hawks host Alma on Monday at 3 p.m.
