Huntingdon’s Price, Messer and Robinson recognized with USA South honors

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Huntingdon seniors Jen Price and Chelsea Messer and freshman Zoya Robinson were named USA South Athletes of the Week on Monday.

Price was named Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week, Messer was named Softball Player of the Week and Robinson was named Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week. 

Price, a native of San Ramon, Calif., was recognized for her performance in an 11-6 win over Oglethorpe. Price set a single-game program record with eight caused turnovers and finished with one goal, eight ground balls and three draw controls.

Messer, a native of Opelika, Ala., helped lead Huntingdon to a 4-0 record this past week over Wesleyan and Agnes Scott and finished 8-for-12 (.667) with a .917 slugging percentage, scored six runs, five RBIs, one double, one triple and stole seven bases.

In a doubleheader against Wesleyan, Messer went 3-for-6 with four runs scored, drove in one run and stole four bases. In the doubleheader against Agnes Scott, she finished 5-for-6 with four RBIs, scored two runs, had one double and one triple and stole three bases.

Robinson, a native of Montgomery, Ala., finished the weekend with a 2-0 record at No. 1 singles and a 3-0 record at No. 1 doubles. The Lady Hawks won all three matches 9-0. 

In singles, Robinson won 6-1, 6-4 over Wesleyan and 6-0, 6-1 against Mary Baldwin. In doubles, Robinson teamed with Heather Tabor to win 8-1 against Wesleyan, Ferrum and Mary Baldwin.

Baseball Player of the Week
James Lovett, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior catcher from West Palm Beach, Florida went a combined 10-for-16 (.625) with a slugging percentage of 1.000, six RBI, two runs scored, two home runs and one walk as the Bishops posted a 3-3 record last week. In a 4-2 loss to St. Andrews, Lovett was 2-for-4. In a doubleheader split with Washington and Lee, Lovett was a combined 2-for-2 with three RBI, one run scored and one home run. Finally, in taking two out of three games from USA South foe Averett, Lovett was a combined 6-for-10 with three RBI, one run scored, one home run and one walk. Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Seth Debity, Maryville - The senior from Madisonville, Tennessee tossed a complete-game shutout in a 3-0 victory over USA South foe Piedmont in his only appearance on the mound last week for the Scots. Debity went the distance allowing just two hits and one walk with 11 strikeouts. Also Nominated: Ryan Broaderick, LaGrange; Cliff Alexander, Ferrum; Ryan Grant, N.C. Wesleyan; Garrett Kriston, Covenant; Adam Murray, Greensboro; T.J. Viracola, Averett; Travis Johnson, Methodist; Trevor Pence, William Peace.

 

Baseball Rookie of the Week
Trey Croom, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman third baseman from Wilmington, North Carolina went a combined 12-for-24 (.500) with six runs scored, four RBI, two double and three walks as the Bishops posted a 3-3 record last week. In a 4-2 loss to St. Andrews, Croom was held hitless. In a doubleheader split with Washington and Lee, Croom was a combined 4-for-5 with two RBI, two runs scored and one double. Finally, in taking two out of three games from USA South foe Averett, Croom was a combined 8-for-15 with four runs scored, two RBI, one double and three walks. Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Matt Reitz, Covenant - The Jacksonville, Florida freshman started and tossed seven innings, earning a no-decision, in a 5-4, ten-inning, victory over USA South rival LaGrange in his only appearance on the mound last week for the Scots. Reitz allowed two runs on nine hits with one walk and left the game with the lead. Also Nominated: Austin Delozier, Maryville; Hunter Peck, Ferrum; Matt Vonderschmidt, Piedmont.

 

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Lacrosse Player of the Week
Victoria Doyle, Meredith - The Danbury, Connecticut senior midfielder totaled ten points on nine goals and one assist with eight draw controls, four caused turnovers and three ground balls in a 2-0 week for the Avenging Angels. In an 18-9 victory over Guilford, Doyle scored five goals with one assist, four draw controls and two caused turnovers. In a 20-8 win over Virginia Wesleyan, Doyle scored four times with four draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Also Nominated: Lonnitria Keenan, Huntingdon; Maggie McDaniel, Piedmont; Madison Ronelli, Methodist.
 

Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Jen Price, Huntingdon - The San Ramon, California senior midfielder set a new single-game school record with eight caused turnovers in an 11-6 victory over Oglethorpe. Price also added one goal, eight ground balls and three draw controls. Also Nominated: Holly Hite, Meredith; Emily Ewin, Methodist.

 

Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Julie Capretti, Meredith - The Ashburn, Virginia freshman attacker tallied 10 points on four goals and six assists with with two ground balls in a 2-0 week for the Avenging Angels. In an 18-9 victory over Guilford, Capretti scored four goals with three assists and one ground ball. In a 20-8 win over Virginia Wesleyan, Capretti assisted on three scored and added one ground ball. Also Nominated: Ariana Kelty, Huntingdon; Kaelyn Holland, Methodist.

Chelsea Messer, Huntingdon - The senior infielder from Prattville, Alabama went a combined 8-for-12 (.667) with a .917 slugging percentage, six runs scored, five RBI, one double, one triple and seven stolen bases as the Hawks posted a 4-0 record last week. In a doubleheader sweep of Wesleyan, Messer was a combined 3-for-6 with four runs scored, one run batted in and four stolen bases. In a doubleheader sweep of Agnes Scott, Messer was a combined 5-for-6 with four RBI, two runs scored, one double, one triple and three stolen bases. Softball Pitcher of the Week
Taylor Jackson, Meredith - The Hope Mills, North Carolina sophomore earned two complete-game victories last week for the Avenging Angels in two appearances in the circle. In 11 innings pitched, Jackson allowed just one unearned run on five hits with 11 walks and 16 strikeouts. In a 10-1, six-inning win over Wilson, Jackson went the distance allowing one unearned run on two hits with nine walks and ten strikeouts. In an 8-0, five-inning, complete-game shutout victory over McDaniel, Jackson allowed three hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Softball Rookie of the Week
Maegan Harrison, LaGrange - The freshman infielder from Bainbridge, Georgia went a combined 6-for-14 (.429) with a .714 slugging percentage, nine RBI, three runs scored, one double and one home run as Panthers posted a 3-1 record last week. In a doubleheader sweep of Agnes Scott, Harrison was a combined 3-for-7 with four RBI, three runs scored and her first collegiate home run which was a grand slam. In a doubleheader split with Wesleyan, Harrison was a combined 3-for-7 with five RBI, two runs scored and one double. Also Nominated: Alexus Murray, Maryville; Bryce Smith, Meredith; Shelby Godwin, N.C. Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Kelsey Durham, William Peace - The freshman from Graham, North Carolina earned a 2-2 record with one save and a 1.40 ERA in five appearances for the Pacers last week. In four starts and 25 innings pitched, Durham allowed 12 runs, only five of which were earned, on 24 hits with five walks and 13 strikeouts. Her two losses came versus 12th-ranked Christopher Newport and ninth-ranked Rowan as she allowed just one earned run in 13 innings pitched. Durham's two victories came versus McDaniel and Hood as she pitched 11.1 innings and allowed four earned runs with six strikeouts. Finally, Durham's save was in an 8-7 victory over Rowan. MEN'S TENNIS

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Matthew Harvie, Covenant - The sophomore from Grayson, Georgia earned a 2-0 record at both the number-one singles and doubles positions last week for the Scots. Harvie earned singles victories over opponents from USA South foe Maryville and Johnson. In doubles action, Harvie teamed with Chris Cox to gain the two wins. Also Nominated: Daniel Silva, Maryville; Oliver Lindqvist, Averett; Aaron Triplett, Huntingdon; Matthew Metzger, Piedmont.
 

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Oliver Lindqvist, Averett - The freshman from Stockholm, Sweden earned a 2-0 record at both the number-one singles and doubles positions last week for the Cougars. Lindqvist earned singles victories over opponents from Montreat and Randolph. In doubles action, Lindqvist teamed with James Wright to gain the two wins. Also Nominated: Trey Wood, Covenant; Marcos Escudero Herrero, Maryville; Harrison LaBollita, Piedmont.

 

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Ran Zhang, Meredith - The sophomore from Kumming, China earned a 3-0 singles record at both number-two singles and number-one doubles last week for the Avenging Angels. In singles, Zhang's three victories came versus Chowan, Barton and USA South foe Piedmont. In doubles, she teamed with Catherine Bryant to collect the three wins. Also Nominated: Annie DeLuca, Covenant; Maddy Little, Maryville; Heidi Sarkkinen, Averett; Sandy Mayson, Huntingdon' Morgan Cowart, Piedmont; Sam Munze, Methodist.
 

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Zoya Robinson, Huntingdon - The freshman from Montgomery, Alabama earned a 2-0 singles record at number-one singles and a 3-0 record at number-one doubles last week for the Hawks. In singles, Robinson earned victories over opponents from Wesleyan and USA South foe Mary Baldwin. In doubles, Robinson teamed with Heather Tabor to collect wins over Wesleyan along with USA South foes Ferrum and Mary Baldwin. Also Nominated: Emily Wilkinson, Meredith; Danielle Morin, Covenant; Heidi Sarkkinen, Averett; Jenna Landis, Methodist.
