Lady Hawks defeat Ferrum in USA South opener

FERRUM, Va. – The Huntingdon women's lacrosse team opened its USA South Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday and defeated Ferrum 9-5.

Leading 3-2 at halftime, the Lady Hawks outscored Ferrum 6-3 in the second half to pick up their third straight win and first win over Ferrum in program history.

Jade Paul scored 15 seconds into the second half with an assist from Jen Price to give Huntingdon (3-3, 1-0 USA South) a two goal lead. Paul netted her second goal just over nine minutes later to give Huntingdon a 5-2 lead.

The panthers answered back to pull within two, but Huntingdon used a 4-0 run to take a 9-3 lead with 7:35 remaining. Ferrum (1-4, 0-1 USA South) scored the game's final two goals but the Huntingdon defense held strong and secured the win.

Huntingdon outshot Ferrum 30-12 and finished 10-of-13 on clears.

Senior Shannen O'Leary scored two goals, had one assist, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Lonnitria Keenan and Paul each had two goals while Briana Gress and Bridget Lee scored once.

Price scored one goal, had one assist, four ground balls, four draw controls and two caused turnovers. Candace Williams had one assist and two caused turnovers.

The Lady Hawks will play at Greensboro on Sunday at 1 p.m.
