Huntingdon battles Piedmont in conference opener

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Huntingdon women's lacrosse team opened its USA South Athletic Conference schedule on Wednesday with a 13-9 loss to Piedmont.

Piedmont, which leads the USA South standings, improved to 7-4 on the season and 3-0 in the conference. The Lady Hawks fall to 1-8 and 0-1 in the USA South.

The Lions opened the game with four goals in the first 10 minutes of play before Jade Paul scored for the Lady Hawks.

Piedmont answered with a pair of goals before Victoria Krupa cut the lead to four. Piedmont added two more goals to pull ahead 8-2. Each team traded goals before halftime as the Lions led 9-3.

Coming out of the break, behind two goals from Carolyn Smith and one each from Sarah Brooks and Maddy Morrison, the Lady Hawks scored four unanswered goals to make the score 9-7 with 13:21 to play.

Piedmont outscored the Lady Hawks 4-2 in the final 12:43 to put the game away.

Paul led Huntingdon with three goals and three draw controls. The sophomore also collected four ground balls.

Morrison had three points with two goals and one assist. Smith had two goals while Krupa had one goal and six ground balls.

Freshman goalie Alyssa Alvarado six saves and a team-high seven ground balls.

The Lady Hawks host Ferrum on Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup.
