Baldwin and Herron earn first NCAA-era wins for Huntingdon wrestling team

LEXINGTON, Va. – Freshmen Mason Baldwin and Jesse Herron each earned individual wins for the first-year Huntingdon wrestling team on Sunday in the Washington and Lee Duals.

Baldwin picked up the first NCAA-era win in program history, defeating Washington and Lee's Marshall Olszewski 8-1 in the 157-pound weight class. Herron defeated Washington and Lee's George Matelich 6-2 in the 184-pound weight class.

"It was exciting for them and I was excited for them," Huntingdon head coach Tom Storey said. "Both of them wrestled their hearts out and it paid off."

As a team, the Hawks fell in all four of Sunday's matches. The Hawks lost to Ohio Northern 49-0, Washington and Lee 26-18, Lycoming 53-0 and Johns Hopkins 36-12. Each of the four programs are well established. Ohio Northern, which began competition in 1966, is the newest of the four programs. Washington and Lee's program dates to 1921.

Storey said it was the kind of competition his team needed to face to understand what is ahead.

"The main goal for this weekend was to get out there and give 100 percent and we did that. Every one of our guys gave it everything they had and we didn't leave anything on the mat," Storey said. "The big thing is now we have a starting point. Our guys have a better idea of what is ahead of them and the things we need to work on to continue improving."

Against Washington and Lee, Wade Thomas (125) and Robert Lowery (141) won by forfeit. Josh Gillaspie (165) and Herron won by forfeit against Johns Hopkins.

Huntingdon returns to action in Tennessee in the MTSU Alumni Duals on Friday and Saturday.
