Beck and Miller lead Hawks in Georgia Intercollegiate Open

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The Huntingdon wrestling team opened its season on Saturday in the Georgia Intercollegiate Open and had two wrestlers place in the top four of their respected weight classes.  

DeAndre Beck battled to a third place finish in the 141 pound division while Wyatt Miller finished fourth in the 174 division.

Beck started his day with a 13-4 major decision victory after receiving a bye in the opening round. The junior followed up with a 6-3 decision before falling 11-10 in the semifinals. The loss placed Beck in the consolation bracket.

Beck won the consolation semifinal by way of an 18-3 technical fall before taking a 16-6 major decision in the third place bout.

Miller went 3-2 in route to his fourth place finish. He opened his day with an 18-0 technical fall in the opening round of the 174 weight class. Miller followed up with a pin to advance him to the semifinals but fell by way of a technical fall, 16-1.

The sophomore took a narrow 5-3 decision to advance him to the third place match, but ended his day with an 8-5 loss.  

Mason Blakeney (133) and Brandon Abejon (149) each earned wins for the Hawks. A total of 17 Huntingdon wrestlers competed in the open tournament.

The Hawks travel to Ferrum on Friday to take on Spartanburg Methodist College at 6 p.m.
