Miller places third in Cumberland Open

LEBANON, Tenn. – Huntingdon wrestler Wyatt Miller took a 10-8 decision to place third in the 174 weight class in Saturday's Cumberland Open.

Miller won his first two matches of the day by pinning his first opponent in 6:34 and winning by tech fall 20-2 in the quarterfinals. Miller was then pinned in the semifinals before winning his first consolation match by an 11-7 decision.

The sophomore closed his day with a victory in the third-place match.

Huntingdon had 11 wrestlers record at least one win on Saturday. Freshman Wade Thomas (125 pounds), Mason Blakeney (133), Deon Maxwell (165) and Miller (174) each won multiple matches.

Maxwell wrestled his way to the 165-pound semifinals. The junior won 3-2 in his first match and won by injury default in the quarterfinals. He went on to lose 8-2 in the semifinals and by major decision 10-1 in the consolation semifinals.

Thomas advanced to the quarterfinals in the 125 weight class but lost by Tech Fall. He claimed one more victory with a 9-6 decision before losing 9-1 in his second consolation match.

Blakeney lost his first match of the day but answered with an 18-2 tech fall victory and an 18-4 major decision win in his first two consolation matches. The sophomore was then pinned to finish his afternoon.

Huntingdon hosts Allen University in Wilson Gym on Saturday at 2 p.m.
