Hawks win 34 matches in Millikin Open

DECATUR, Ill.  – The Huntingdon wrestling team won 34 matches in the Millikin Open on Saturday.

Six Hawks finished in the top-eight of their weight classes, eight Hawks won at least two matches and four Hawks won at least three matches.

Senior DeAndre Beck won five matches and placed third in the 141-pound weight class. Beck won by major decision in the first round before losing 4-2 in the second round. In the consolation bracket, Beck won four straight matches, winning by pin (5:46) and major decision (11-3) before winning 6-2 and 6-3 in his final two matches.

Junior Ryan Brooks won three matches in the 125-pound weight class and finished fifth. Brooks won his first match by pin (5:52) and won his second match by an injury default. Brooks was pinned in the main draw semifinals and lost a 4-3 decision in the consolation semifinals. He won the fifth-place match 11-5.

Junior Joel Gonzalez won three matches and finished seventh in the 285-pound weight class. Gonzalez advanced through the first two rounds with a bye and a forfeit before being pinned in the quarterfinals. He bounced back with a pin (5:56) in the consolation quarterfinals, lost 5-1 in the consolation semifinals and won by forfeit in the seventh-place match.

Junior Sam Garrison won three matches and finished eighth in the 165-pound weight class. Garrison lost his first match of the day by pin before winning three straight matches in the consolation bracket by injury default, decision (8-2) and technical fall (16-1). Garrison lost by pin in the seventh-place match.

Freshman Jacob Smith won two consolation matches by decision (6-4) and pin (4:18) to finish eighth in the 133-pound weight class and junior Jared Mercer won two consolation matches by sudden victory (2-1) and decision (5-3) to finish eighth in the 157-pound weight class.
