Pearson and Fontenot place 3rd to lead Huntingdon in Star City Open

SALEM, Va.  – The Huntingdon wrestling team won 16 matches and had two wrestlers place in the top-three on Sunday in the Star City Open.

As a team, the Hawks were ninth with 56.5 points. Otterbein University won the 13-team tournament with 137 points. Averett University was second with 127.5 points and Elizabethtown College was third with 126.5 points.

Quintez Pearson (149 pounds) and Kaleb Fontenot (157) each went 3-1 and finished third for Huntingdon.

Pearson won by major decision (13-5) in his first match and won a 10-6 decision in the 149 quarterfinals. Following a loss in the semifinals, Pearson won the third-place match 11-5.

Fontenot won his first match by pin (2:49) before winning 11-7 in the 157 quarterfinals. After a loss in the semifinals, Fontenot won the third-place match by injury forfeit.

Seven other Hawks won at least one match on Sunday. Ryan Brooks (125), Reagan Prevatt (165) and Wyatt Miller (174) each went 2-2 and finished eighth in their weight classes.

Brooks won his first match by major decision (13-3) before losing 4-3 in the 125 quarterfinals. Brooks won his first consolation match 7-6 before losing in the consolation semifinals.

Prevatt lost his first match before advancing to the 165 consolation semifinals with a bye, a technical fall (16-0) and a pin (4:11). Prevatt lost 5-3 in the consolation semifinals.

Miller lost his first match but advanced to the 174 consolation semifinals with a bye, a pin (1:29) and a major decision (19-8). Miller lost 10-7 in the consolation semifinals.

Toren Pollard (149), Cody Dixon (184), Austin Phillips (184) and Joseph Pearson (285) each went 1-2 in the tournament. Pollard's win was by technical fall (16-0), Dixon's win was by major decision (15-4), Phillips's win was by pin (2:22) and Pearson's win was by a 10-5 decision.

Coming Up: Huntingdon returns to action on Dec. 1 with its first home event of the season. The Hawks will host Brewton-Parker and Truett-McConnell.
