MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Huntingdon athletic director Mike Turk officially announced the hiring of Matt Gill as head women's soccer coach on Monday.

Gill has spent the past six seasons as an assistant coach at the Division III level with two different schools.

"We are extremely pleased to have coach Gill join us as our head women's soccer coach," Turk said. "His energy and attention to detail certainly stood out during the hiring process, and ultimately led us to offer him the job.  We are looking forward to him leading our program into the future."

Gill, a 2009 graduate of Mount Ida College, has spent the past two seasons as a women's assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan College. The Marlins went 23-17-2 in Gill's two seasons there.

Prior to Virginia Wesleyan, Gill spent four seasons as a men's assistant coach at his alma mater. During his time as a Mustang, Gill recruited Carlos Martinez, who finished his career as a four-time All-Conference selection, conference Offensive Player of the Year, All-New England 3rd team and finished as the Mustangs' all-time leading scorer.

"I'd like to thank President J. Cameron West, Coach Turk and Vice President Jay Dorman for this great opportunity," Gill said. "I'm excited that this will be my first head coaching position, but I am ready to step in and grow the program."

Last season, the Lady Hawks finished 4-10-2 and graduated one senior. Huntingdon went to overtime four times, including three double overtime games, and lost five games by two goals or less.

"I've spoken with some of the girls, and I see an opportunity for these girls to learn and grow and I think they are excited to hit the field for spring practice," Gill said.

Gill earned a Bachelor of Science with a degree in sport management and a concentration in coaching from Mount Ida. Gill received a Masters of Science in management from Mount Ida.

As a junior and senior at Mount Ida, Gill was twice named second-team all-conference and also named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) academic all-conference team. He finished his career there with six goals and seven assists in 33 games played. Before transferring and being named a senior captain, he played for two seasons at Garden City College in his home state of Kansas.

Gill is married to the former Sarah Moss.

On Monday, Turk also announced the addition of assistant football coach Mike Johnson. A native of New Market, Md., Johnson will coach corner backs.

He spent the past season as a graduate assistant at Malone University. Before that, Johnson played defensive back for four seasons at Bryant University. He finished his playing career with 104 tackles, two sacks, four fumble recoveries and five interceptions.
