MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon women's soccer team competed in its first scrimmage on Sunday and will continue its hard work throughout the first week of classes.

The Lady Hawks played three 30-minute periods on Sunday against Andrew College and first-year head coach Matt Gill was pleased with his team's energy to start the game.

"I think we had a very good first 15 minutes to start out and we went up 1-0," Gill said. "For us, understanding how to hold a lead was important. We have some really good pieces, but we just need to figure out how to be better organized on defense."

Gill welcomed nine players from the 2015 season and brought in six newcomers. Gill has emphasized team unity and believes team culture is important.

"It's really important to keep the team united," Gill said. "These freshmen are here to help. I wish we had a few more, but going forward, I think that team culture is really important for us. These girls have really bought into the process and it's a really tight group."

Huntingdon will practice once a day, with conditioning in the morning during the first week of school. The Lady Hawks will turn their focus to game preparation early the following week before traveling to Birmingham-Southern on Sept. 1.  Gill said the point of emphasis for the season is to "win the day."

"Every day we work, we need to get better," Gill said. "We won't deviate from the plan and we need to trust the process. It's important to have an overall belief that we can do well. We're setting a standard of accountability and the players are seeing it."
