Huntingdon takes Maryville to OT, but falls in USA South quarterfinals

MARYVILLE, Tenn.  – The Huntingdon women's soccer team took Maryville to overtime on Sunday but fell to the Scots 3-2 in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals.

The Scots controlled the game early, scoring two goals in the first 14 minutes before Huntingdon rallied. Freshman Elena Guy scored in the 31st minute to make it a one-goal game at halftime. In the second half, junior Meredith Harrison tied the game with a goal in the 70th minute.

The Huntingdon defense limited Maryville, which took eight shots in the first 69 minutes of the game, to two shots in the final 21 minutes of regulation. Goalkeeper Kylie Kersh made the save on both shots, including one in the final four minutes of regulation.

In overtime, Huntingdon continued to match the Scots for more than seven minutes before Maryville ended the game on a header at the 97:41 mark.

Maryville, the top-seeded team in the West Division, will play Meredith in the conference semifinals. For Huntingdon, the loss ends the most successful season for the Lady Hawks during the NCAA era.

Huntingdon ends the season with its most wins of the NCAA era (11) and the first winning season of the NCAA era (11-7-1). The Lady Hawks also set their NCAA-era season records for most shutouts (9), fewest goals allowed (19), most assists (22) and most points (90). The team's 34 goals scored this season are the third most for Huntingdon during the NCAA era and the most since the 2004 team scored 43.
