HUNTINGDON WOMEN’S TENNIS LOOKING FOR SUCCESS IN USTA/ITA SOUTH REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon women's tennis team is hoping to build off of its past two performances in the USTA/ITA South Region Championships.

The Hawks are carrying nine players to the tournament in Atlanta, Ga., this weekend. The Hawks won 16 matches in the tournament each of the past two years.

"We had an excellent performance last year," Huntingdon women's tennis coach Ximena Moore said. "We've made improvement the past couple of years and we're looking to improve more this season. I feel like all of our girls have a good opportunity to win their first round matches in singles and doubles. This is a very tough tournament but that is one of our goals."

Competition begins on Friday in singles and doubles for the A draw and the B draw.

Huntingdon junior Katie Scott is the No. 6 seed in the tournament. Moore said it is the highest seeding a Huntingdon women's player has carried into the event.

Scott reached the quarterfinals last season.

"Her goal is to make it to the quarterfinals or better this time," Moore said. "She has been playing well, playing with confidence and continuing to improve."

Of the nine players Huntingdon is entering in the tournament, five are freshmen. Moore said this will be a good first test for them. She believes it will be good experience for the entire team.

"This will help us to see where we stand right now," Moore said. "We'll be playing against players that we will likely see again in the spring. This weekend will give us an opportunity to see what some other teams have and how we match up."
