Huntingdon hosting women’s USTA/ITA South Regional Championships this weekend
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon women's tennis team will host the 2012 USTA/ITA South Regional Championships this weekend at Lagoon Park. The tournament begins on Friday and will run through Sunday.
Eighty-two players from eleven NCAA Division III teams, including five teams that were ranked in the top 20 of the ITA Atlantic South Region at the end of last spring, will be competing. Emory University is ranked No. 1 in the region and No. 3 in the national poll. University of the South is ranked No. 5 in the region and 18th in the nation, Methodist University is ranked 10th in the region, Millsaps is ranked 11th and Huntingdon is 20th. Joining those five teams are Birmingham-Southern, Centre College, Covenant College, Mississippi College, Piedmont College and Rhodes College.
The main singles draw will consist of 52 players, including No. 1 seed Gabrielle Clark from Emory. Clark won the Division III national championship last spring. Huntingdon senior Katie Scott is among the top 14 seeds in the tournament. The University of the South's Bronte Goodhue and Jenny Liles are seeded No. 1 in the main draw of doubles. Twenty-four doubles teams will begin play in the main draw on Friday.
Two rounds of doubles are scheduled for the first day, with the Round of 32 set to start at 8 a.m. and the Round of 16 to follow. The first round of singles will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Friday. Two rounds of singles will be played on Friday.
The singles and doubles champions this weekend will earn an automatic berth in the 2012 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile on Oct. 11-14.
In addition to the main draws, there is also a B-draw for singles and doubles. Thirty singles players and 15 doubles teams are competing in the B-draws.
