Top-seeded Huntingdon women’s tennis ready for GSAC tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon women's tennis team has been a regular in the Great South Athletic Conference tournament finals.

The Lady Hawks have reached the finals six straight seasons, winning two conference titles. This weekend, Huntingdon will try to win its third GSAC tournament title in seven seasons.

The tournament begins on Friday and the top-seeded Lady Hawks will begin play on Saturday against the winner of Wesleyan and Salem. The match is scheduled for noon Central.

"We are very confident going into the tournament. We have a good team chemistry and we have been playing well this season," Huntingdon head coach Ximena Moore said. "The leadership on this team and the chemistry of the team will be important in helping us pull through this weekend. We have an opportunity to win the tournament and that's what we're going to go after."

Salem College is hosting the GSAC tournament in Clemmons, N.C. The semifinals will be Saturday with the championship match on Sunday at 11 a.m. Central.

"We have a strong team and we're excited about the tournament," Huntingdon sophomore Taylor Clark said. "We're playing with confidence and we want to play our best this weekend. We have to stay focused and support each other. We want to go out there and give it our best and leave everything on the court."

Huntingdon (17-3) enters the tournament with a 10-0 conference record this season. Among the wins are two over four-time defending GSAC tournament champion Agnes Scott.

Moore and Clark both said the wins over Agnes Scott have been good for the Lady Hawks' confidence. But both said the wins in the regular season won't matter this weekend.

"The regular season is over and we're starting a new chapter this week," Moore said. "We have to concentrate on the conference tournament and on being ready for each match. Whoever we face, we want to be prepared and ready for the challenge."
